| Williamston,
North
Carolina, along the enchanting Roanoke
River, is in the northeastern portion of the
state of NC. As of the 2000 Census,
Williamston reported a population of 5,843 residents.
It is the largest town in Martin
County and serves as the county seat.
This close-knit community gathers to
celebrate together throughout the year. There is Mai
Day in May, the Martin County United
Way Invitational Golf Tournament in August, and
the Christmas parade in December. The annual North
Carolina Country Stampede attracts thousands of
visitors to the streets of Williamston each September. Another
draw to the Roanoke River region is the abundance
of recreational
activities. The Roanoke
River Paddle Trail and Canoe Camping System offers
visitors an intimate experience of the habitat by
allowing them to spend the night on one of the camping
platforms in the swamp. Visitors enjoy all of the
striking natural surroundings while meandering
through the swamps and creeks by kayak or canoe. Nature
lovers can also view an amazing array of fish,
birds and other wildlife at the River's National
Wildlife Refuge
Williamston is in close proximity to Greenville, Raleigh
and Durham. This central
location is a key factor in attracting new businesses
and investors to the area. Williamston's
flourishing economy is due in part to the efforts
to revitalize the downtown area, such as the opening
of The Senator
Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center. In
addition, Williamston and Martin Counties both
have economic
plans in place to provide support and financial
incentives to the local business community. This
program is a valuable asset to businesses looking to
relocate or expand their current companies in Martin
County.

abundance of excellent educational opportunities.
Williamston is home to excellent public
schools, private schools and Martin
Community College, which is one of the twelve
community colleges located within the
region. Nearby in Greenville
is the East
Carolina University, which includes the
affiliated Brody
School of Medicine and the College
of Business. Other higher learning institutions
such as Elizabeth
City State University and Chowan
College in Murfreesboro are
within a short distance of Williamston. Duke
University in Durham,
North
Carolina State University in Raleigh,
and the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are within
an hour and a half's drive.
Williamston's rich history is evident today in places
such as the town's Commercial District that
is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. Other local
sites include the Asa
Biggs House, the Old
Martin County Courthouse, Doctor W. Bagley's
Office, the Sunny
Side Oyster Bar and the Skewarkey
Primitive Baptist Church. 'Walking
Williamston' is a self-guided tour highlighting the
architectural style of these buildings and others
found within the two nationally recognized
districts located in Williamston. The Skewarkee
Trail is another avenue to experience the area. This
paved trail connects downtown Williamston to the
Roanoke River by way of an old railroad
corridor.
