Williamston, North Carolina, along the enchanting Roanoke River, is in the northeastern portion of the state of NC.  As of the 2000 Census, Williamston reported a population of 5,843 residents. It is the largest town in Martin County and serves as the county seat.

This close-knit community gathers to celebrate together throughout the year. There is Mai Day in May, the Martin County United Way Invitational Golf Tournament in August, and the Christmas parade in December. The annual North Carolina Country Stampede attracts thousands of visitors to the streets of Williamston each September. Another draw to the Roanoke River region is the abundance of recreational activities. The Roanoke River Paddle Trail and Canoe Camping System offers visitors an intimate experience of the habitat by allowing them to spend the night on one of the camping platforms in the swamp. Visitors enjoy all of the striking natural surroundings while meandering through the swamps and creeks by kayak or canoe. Nature lovers can also view an amazing array of fish, birds and other wildlife at the River's  National Wildlife Refuge

Williamston is in close proximity to GreenvilleRaleigh and Durham. This central location is a key factor in attracting new businesses and investors to the area. Williamston's flourishing economy is due in part to the efforts to revitalize the downtown area, such as the opening of The Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center.  In addition, Williamston and Martin Counties both have economic plans in place to provide support and financial incentives to the local business community. This program is a valuable asset to businesses looking to relocate or expand their current companies in Martin County.

The area offers prospective students an abundance of excellent educational opportunities. Williamston is home to excellent public schools, private schools and Martin Community College, which is one of the twelve community colleges located within the region.  Nearby in Greenville is the East Carolina University, which includes the affiliated Brody School of Medicine and the College of Business. Other higher learning institutions such as Elizabeth City State University and Chowan College in Murfreesboro are within a short distance of Williamston.  Duke University in Durham, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are within an hour and a half's drive.

Williamston's rich history is evident today in places such as the town's Commercial District that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Other local sites include the Asa Biggs House, the Old Martin County Courthouse, Doctor W. Bagley's Office, the Sunny Side Oyster Bar and the Skewarkey Primitive Baptist Church. 'Walking Williamston' is a self-guided tour highlighting the architectural style of these buildings and others found within the two nationally recognized districts located in Williamston. The Skewarkee Trail is another avenue to experience the area. This paved trail connects downtown Williamston to the Roanoke River by way of an old railroad corridor.

Williamston's small town charm, stunning natural beauty and excellent quality of life make this NC river town a fabulous place to call home.
